Excerpts From Talcott's Property Deeds

Deed Number One

This is part of a deed, executed 7 May 1807, and recorded in 1816, that shows that Talcott purchased property from Daniel Harris and his wife Suzannah, of Madison, Madison County, New York for the amount of "...two hundred and forty dollars lawful money of the United States..."

This deed shows Talcott's address as Augusta, Oneida County, New York, so it's safe to assume that this is the approximate date that he moved his family to Madison.

This part of the same deed shows the physical dimensions of the property. This deed clearly states that the property is twenty acres.

This part of the deed shows that Daniel Harris executed the deed before Judge Blackstone on 27 February 1815. It's interesting to note that it states that Suzannah "...executed this deed as her free and voluntary act without any fear or compulsion from her said husband..." The deed was recorded over a year later on 16 march 1816.

Deed Number Two

This is part of a second deed, executed on 17 December 1807, and recorded in 1816, that shows that Talcott purchased ten acres from Patty Perkins, of Madison, Madison County, New York for the amount of two hundred and fifty dollars.

This part of the second deed shows the physical dimensions of the property. A chain was an instrument used for surveying and consisted of 100 linked pieces of iron or steel, 66 feet in length. The size of the parcel isn't clear in this deed; however, doing the math reveals that this parcel of land was ten acres in size.

This part of the second deed shows that Patty Perkins executed the deed before Judge Blackstone on 27 February 1815. The deed was recorded over a year later on 16 march 1816.

Deed Number Three

This is part of a third deed, dated 13 March 1815, that shows Talcott and Temperance sold property to Charly Howard of Augusta, Oneida County, New York for the sum of one thousand dollars.

This part of the third deed shows the physical dimensions of the property. The deed clearly states that this parcel of land was thirty acres in size.

This part of the third deed shows that Talcott and Temperance executed the deed before Judge Cleveland on 29 February 1815, with Cyrus Howard as a witness. The deed was recorded over a year later on 16 march 1816.
