- — In July 1893 the Oneida Post published the names of numerous Civil War veterans from the
Smithfield-Madison, New York area..
The list included six Devan's—Milo, Henry, David, Wallace,
Truman, and Jay. All five of Henry's sons served in and survived the Civil War.
DeVan connection - indirect: Henry Devan "might be" the son of
Talcott Devan and the brother of Gr-Gr-Grandfather Erastus N. DeVan.
Note: This information was gleaned from the 1850 census records but has not been confirmed
as of 12/28/2010. However, two of Henry's children have the same names (Milo & Laura) as two of his
siblings. The 1810 census shows that Talcott had three sons under 10 years old—Milo,
Erastus and an unnamed. It's highly probably that Henry was the unknown son. Henry was born within
a year of Erastus and he named two of his children—Milo and Laura—after two of Talcott's children.

Note: This information was gleaned from census records and Erastus N. DeVan's
deposition but has not been confirmed as of
12/28/2010. Reuben was the nephew of Erastus N. DeVan; his mother's name is
unknown
at this time. Reuben was born in New York and, according to Erastus' deposition, moved
to Michigan with his father and then returned to live in Ohio prior to joining the
Civil War effort. According to the deposition, two of Reuben's children were born prior to him
entering the war, and the others were born after his return home.
He returned to Ohio after the war and worked for Erastus and lived near him for a year or two, and
then again moved to Michigan sometime between 1867 and 1870, as shown by the birth locations of
his children Eva and George.
According to Erastus' deposition, Reuben's "...mother was his (Erastus') sister..." but does not reveal her name.
